Learning from a Learner

My name is Sean Meredith. I live in Louisville, Kentucky, with my son, Miles.

I studied math and physics at the University of Kentucky and finished a master’s in electrical engineering at the University of Louisville in 2025, doing research in a nanophotonics lab. I have tutored math and ACT prep since 2016 and now run Meredith Math full time. I am also a firefighter with the Pleasure Ridge Park Fire District and a sergeant in the Marine Corps Reserve.

I learned how to learn in pieces, from teachers who took the time, from books, from failing at things and going back, and from watching hundreds of students get stuck in the same places I did. That is where the name comes from. I am not writing as an authority who has it figured out. I am writing as someone who is still learning and has paid attention to what works.

What I believe

A few things you will see over and over here:

  • You are more in control than you think. The research on locus of control is clear, and so is my experience: the students who believe their effort matters are the ones who improve.
  • The basics are not beneath you. Most trouble in algebra is trouble with fractions. Most trouble in writing is trouble with reading. Go back and fix the foundation and the rest gets easier.
  • Your mind is a gift. I am a Christian, and I think the intellect, the soul and the character of a person are gifts from God. Caring for them well is part of a good life, and a well-educated person is better able to serve the people around them.
  • Education is bigger than school. Schools matter and I want them to be better. But learning is something you own, and nobody can take it from you.

What this site is

Essays, videos and notes on how people learn. Some of it is the science: active recall, spaced practice, the growth mindset work and its limits. Some of it is philosophy and faith. Some of it is practical: how to study, how to read a hard book, how to keep going when it is not working.

Where else to find me

  • The videos are on YouTube, and the short versions go out on Facebook and Instagram. Links are in the footer.
